What's CSP?
CSP stands for Certified Safety Professional, a prestigious professional certification issued by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) in the United States. Earning this certification is an official recognition of an Occupational Safety and Health (HSE) professional’s qualifications and opens the door to better career opportunities.
The CSP credential demonstrates that its holder applies the Gold Standard requirements in the fields of Safety, Health, and Environment (SH&E), reflecting a strong commitment to professional excellence in this domain.
It is important to note that CSP is a professional certification, not just a certificate, and there is a fundamental difference between the two. To be eligible for the CSP exam, a set of core requirements must be met.
Educational Qualification Required to Apply for CSP
A bachelor’s degree is a mandatory requirement to apply for the CSP certification. For degrees issued outside the United States, they will be evaluated to determine their equivalent in the U.S. academic system. Therefore, it is essential to submit your degree translated into English.

Work Experience in Occupational Safety and Health
When applying for the CSP exam, you must have completed 4 years of professional experience in occupational safety and health. In addition, at least 50% of your duties must be directly related to the field, which is common in many Arab countries where most HSE professionals hold full-time positions dedicated to this role.
Furthermore, the level of responsibility and the nature of the tasks you perform should be substantial and specialized, demonstrating a deep professional engagement in the field of safety and health.
BCSP Qualified Credential
Before applying for the CSP certification, you must hold a BCSP-recognized professional credential. The most notable credentials that allow you to apply include ASP (whose requirements we have discussed earlier) and the NEBOSH diploma (either the old syllabus or via TSP under the new syllabus).
However, eligibility is not limited to these two credentials—you can also apply with a variety of other recognized credentials. Some of these are issued directly by BCSP, while others come from different organizations that have agreements for their certifications to be accepted for CSP eligibility.

Before we discuss study resources, it’s important to understand that the CSP exam is based on a “Blueprint”, which is the framework that defines the knowledge areas and topics covered in the test.
In the previous version (CSP10), these areas were divided into 9 knowledge domains. Starting August 2025, the new version (CSP11) reorganizes the content into 7 domains instead of 9.

It is worth noting that each domain has a relative weight in the exam, representing the percentage of total questions it accounts for, as shown below:

Application and Exam Fees for CSP Certification
You can apply for the CSP exam directly through the BCSP website via this link. There, you will create a personal account, start your application, upload the required documents, and pay the application fee of $160. Once your application is approved, you will have a full calendar year to purchase the exam and schedule your test at an authorized testing center.
If you do not take the exam within the year, you can extend your application period for an additional year for $100. This extension is available only once and must be requested within the last 60 days of the original period. The exam fee itself is $350.

Nature of the CSP Exam
The CSP exam consists of 200 multiple-choice questions to be completed within 5.5 hours. Each question has 4 answer options, and you are required to select the most appropriate one.
Some questions may involve calculations or the use of formulas; in such cases, the necessary formula is usually provided with the question.
Calculator Used in the CSP Exam
Starting May 2020, the calculator has been integrated into the exam screen, allowing you to use it directly without bringing a physical calculator. Exam centers do not provide or allow personal calculators, so practicing with the on-screen calculator is an essential part of exam preparation. This helps save time and quickly solve calculation-based questions.
We provide this calculator training for free when you register for our CSP exam preparation course. You will receive the calculator software identical to the one in the exam, with a one-year license exclusive to course participants, and you will practice using it throughout the course.
The calculator provided is a Texas Instruments TI-30XS, the same model used in the exam.
CSP Exam Results and Certification Renewal
At the end of the exam, you will receive your result immediately. If you pass, it is essential to maintain and renew your certification.
Renewal of the CSP certification requires:
Earning 25 recertification points through activities such as attending relevant training courses, obtaining additional certifications, or participating in professional events and activities related to the field.
Paying the annual renewal fee to keep the certification active.
